Montgomery blown away by OSU offer
It finally happened.
Luke Montgomery officially has his chance to become a Buckeye if he wishes.
Montgomery prepared to take what he expected, it would be just another casual call with Ohio State staff, but he eventually learned that Eleven warriors (and many others) were planning to strike at some point this winter or spring. Greg Studrawa and Kennedy Cook came knocking on the door (virtually, of course) on Thursday extending an offer to the prospect in Findlay High School state.
He is now the third prospect in 2023 in the state with an offer from Ohio State, joining Mentor defensive end Brenan Vernon and Pickerington Central safety Sonny Styles. Michigan, Penn State, and Notre Dame highlight some of Montgomery’s other offerings.

We jumped on the phone with Montgomery just minutes after he tweeted the news, and his head – understandably – was still spinning.
“Pretty crazy. Overwhelmed. I’m pretty excited,” Montgomery said. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. I’m so lost for words. I have so much to do now. It’s been wild.
“It was crazy. It’s such a blessing. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I thought it would just be another call with Coach Cook. We usually try to talk once or twice every two weeks, just to catch up and stuff. I wasn’t expecting that at all. Coach Stud called and he offered to me. I was so shocked, honestly.
So… why now? Why have the Buckeyes given the green light? Well, in a twist of fate, this is a case where extending the dead period is to be thanked.
“(Studrawa) said he wanted to wait until I was on campus and my family got off,” Montgomery said. “And then a few days ago, obviously, the dead period extended, and he said, ‘We’re going to offer you now. We really love you, we love your movie. It’s crazy, it’s such a blessing.
When we spoke with Montgomery for the first time this summer, he told us that the Buckeyes target him as an offensive lineman, but they also love him as a hybrid defensive / defensive tackle team. That is, after all, how some schools such as Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech (which each offered) see the 6-foot-5, 265-pound sophomore.
But now the Buckeyes have made it clear that they love him on the offensive line, likely on the outside, as Montgomery thrives on that side of the ball in his first season lined up there.
“They want me on the tackle. I’m just transitioning there this year for O-line, ”Montgomery said. “They really like my footwork. I’ve always had that of basketball and I love basketball. It’s still my favorite sport. They just said your speed and physique are what they love.
“They just want to see me keep growing from now on and get me on campus and everything. I’m gonna call Coach Day tomorrow, actually, to catch up and stuff.
Ohio State coaches haven’t really compared Montgomery to former or current offensive linemen from Buckeye, but Montgomery thinks he compares a bit to NFL Pro-Bowl three-time offensive tackle Lane Johnson . A high ceiling, of course, so you have to work hard to achieve it.
“I’m going to try my best. I’m just going to keep my head down and squeal and keep working hard. That’s it. That’s all I’m going to do,” Montgomery said.
But he’s already worked hard. In the summer, he told us that he feels stronger physically and mentally as he sheds fat and builds muscle. He has continued to transform his body over the past few months. Ironically, he has a slight injury to his leg to thank for it.
“I feel good. It’s been really good,” he said. “It was kind of a blessing in disguise, honestly, when I think about it now. I haven’t played basketball this year. I’m still on the team, but as a precaution – I got injured and I’m still technically out – I didn’t play, I really took that time to focus on my weight loss and my own body. I’ve eaten really well since I got injured. Work out as much as I can, and it really pays off. I’m really in love with the weight room.
So now, aside from enjoying the rest of the day after receiving his Buckeye offer, he’s going to have to deal with friends, family, and media like yours, really asking him when he’s going to commit to the state. from Ohio. Montgomery laughed and said – like Brenan Vernon, another state hopeful of 2023 – that he was going to take his time with his decision. He said after the next football season: “I will definitely think about where I am going.”
“I love the state of Ohio,” Montgomery said. “Coach Stud, he grew up playing 20 minutes away from me at Fostoria. I was born in Columbus. I lived there for about a year and still have family in Columbus. I know the area very well. I go there a lot, I love the campus and obviously the academics are also very numerous.
“I see a lot (of ways I fit into their attack). Obviously, an All-American like Wyatt Davis then Nicholas Petit-Frere. Paris Johnson, my family are actually really great friends with their family, so I’m going to be going to work with them this summer I’m sure in Cincinnati, just to learn from the best.
“They seem to have the best offensive line and the best defensive line in college football every year.”
2023 star receives two sports offer
Montgomery wasn’t the only player offered by the Buckeyes on Thursday.
In a rare move for the state of Ohio, the football and basketball programs have extended a scholarship offering to Milton, Ga. Prospect Lebbeus Overton.
Ohio State has extended an offer to the nation’s No.1 player and Class-2023 No.1 defensive end Lebbeus Overton. Other offerings include Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Oklahoma.

Overton, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound player, is the No. 1 overall player and No. 1 in defensive defense in the 2023 US class. He holds offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia , LSU and Oklahoma, among others.
He’s 2022 Ohio State basketball teammate Bruce Thornton and it looks like the Buckeyes are going to sign Overton from both angles.
