As box office recipes have consistently proven, the public can’t get enough Denzel Washington playing either a former law enforcement veteran or a government official with a troubled past unraveling a plot or conducting an investigation in which he holds serious personal stakes.

If your favorite entry in this particular and very specific subgenre is Ricochet, Crimson Tide, Devil in a blue dress, Fallen, Headquarters, The bone collector, Out of time, Man on fire, The Manchurian candidate, Inside man, Already seen, The Capture of Pelham 123, unstoppable, 2 cannons or Equalizer duology, the 66-year-old’s preference for the crime and action genres has produced some extremely entertaining sensations over the years.

The two-time Oscar winner’s latest effort has now arrived on HBO Max, though it’s safe to say that The small things won’t go down in the history books as one of his best endeavors. That being said, Denzel Washington is as reliable as ever in the lead, with Rami Malek providing solid support as a hotshot detective and Jared Leto once again fully playing an eccentric nutcase as the prime suspect in a murder case.

Reviews have been lukewarm, with The small things Currently holds an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 48%, but as you can see in the reactions below, he performs much better with HBO Max subscribers.

The small things

If you’ve seen half a dozen crime thrillers, then you can predict exactly how the main lines of The small things will play out, although the third act is admittedly refreshing and ambiguous. That being said, for HBO Max’s flagship year of simultaneously showing their movies in streaming and theaters, it’s a disappointing opening salute.
