Karim Ainouz's "The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao" has been named best film in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, the jury chaired by director Nadine Labaki announced on Friday.

The Brazilian family drama has been adapted from a decades-old novel by Martha Batalha, but focuses on the 1950s, when the status of women in Brazilian society was changing. It deals with two women who upset the family by challenging patriarchy.

Oliver Laxe's Jury Prize "Fire Will Come" was also honored in the Un Certain Regard section; Kantemir Balagov for "Beanpole", best director; Chiara Mastroianni for "On a Magical Night", best performance; and "Angel" by Michael Angelo Covino and "A Brother's Love" by Monia Chokri.

Bruno Dumont received a special mention for his film "Joan of Arc", while Albert Serra received a special Jury Prize for "Freedom".

The Un Certain Regard section typically features the adventurous work of lesser-known directors than those chosen for the main competition, as well as stimulating films from well-known directors. This year's selection also included Annie Silverstein's "bull", Danielle Lessovitz's "port authority", Mounia Meddour's "Papicha", "Maryam Touzani's Adam", Midi Z's "Homeward"

French actress Marina Fois, Belgian director Lukas Dhont, Argentine director Lisandro Alonso and German producer Nurhan Sekerci-Porst were also selected.
