Rumors of OLED displays for the future iPad Air and iPad Pro have another chance, with production of OLED-equipped iPads set to start this year. And larger OLED MacBook Pro models could be on the way as well.
That’s according to a report from DigiTimes, which claims that an iPad with a 10.9-inch OLED display could go into production at the end of 2021, ready for release in 2022. Then Apple could look to the 12th. , 9-inch iPad Pro and potentially the 16-inch MacBook Pro, although Cupertino has yet to commit to using OLED panels for its laptops.
DigiTimes probably got all of this through its industry sources – we’re assuming people involved in Apple’s supply chain, rather than Cupertino insiders – so we have to take these rumors with a pinch of salt. But the report adds that the new iPads could get a big improvement in display in the near future.
That’s not to say that the LCD panels used in today’s iPads are bad at all. The Liquid Retina display of iPad Pro models is partially impressive, with its 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. But OLED panels, which are now found in the iPhone 12 lineup, tend to deliver better colors and better color. contrast than their LCD counterparts, which would likely be a major upgrade for future iPads, especially when it comes to viewing photos and watching videos.
Since DigiTimes sources mention a 10.9-inch iPad, which happens to be the same display size as the latest iPad Air, we can safely say that Apple’s mid-range tablet will be the first to get. an OLED screen. At first glance, it seems odd that the iPad Air is getting the OLED first, but it looks like something better is available for the iPad Pro.
The iPad Pro 2021 is expected to receive a mini LED display this month at Apple’s spring event. An upgrade from traditional LCDs, the mini-LED offers a wider contrast ratio and deeper blacks, similar to OLED, but with even higher brightness and less risk of burn-out.
Given that the iPad Air was upgraded last year with a new Pro-type design, the wait until 2022 for an improved model seems relatively logical.
MacBook Pro with OLED
The idea that a 16in or potentially 17in MacBook Pro could have an OLED display is arguably more interesting.
In current MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs, Retina LCD displays look pretty impressive with solid color accuracy. But switching to OLED could see even better color and contrast, ideal for professional photo and video editors.
But OLED displays have appeared in Windows 10 laptops, and they can drive prices up quite sharply. So we risk assuming that a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an OLED display will not be compatible with wallets.
Time will tell if this inside information pays off. But we’re quietly optimistic that OLED iPads are on the way.
