The iPad mini 6 has a neat orientation trick for those misplaced volume buttons

The iPad mini 6 is the first major redesign of the small tablet since its debut. The new look is more like the iPad Air and less like the base iPad thanks to the uniform bezels, Touch ID in the sleep / wake button, and the lack of a home button. There is also an interesting behavior with the volume buttons moved which is unique to the iPad mini 6.

The volume buttons on the iPad are generally placed like the volume buttons on the iPhone: at the top left when oriented with the charging port at the bottom. This has changed for the iPad mini 6, which places the volume up and down buttons along the top edge near the sleep / wake button.

Placement is a curious change that likely has to do with the packaging of everything inside the fullscreen iPad mini, but it turns out there’s more to it than just the internal layout. Developer Stitch Fix Jon Hill shared a clip today that highlights new behavior for those moved volume buttons.

Volume buttons are no longer mapped to increase and decrease volume. Instead, the volume increase is triggered by the volume button that sits above the other and vice versa. This is a nifty trick for a full screen tablet that can be used properly in any orientation. The previous behavior of the volume buttons meant that in two of the four possible ways to hold it, the volume buttons were reversed.

Now for wishful thinking: Could we see this on a future iPad Pro design that moves the Face ID camera to the center when viewed in landscape, not center portrait? What do you think of this change? Confusing or relieving? Let us know in the comments.
