The JetBlue flight from Newark was diverted to JFK after "an unusual smell" made the passengers sick, the crew

QUEENS – A JetBlue flight to the Dominican Republic from Newark Liberty International Airport was rerouted on JFK airport Sunday morning shortly after takeoff when an "unusual smell" made some sick passengers and crew, said the airline.

The JetBlue 1203 flight, from Newark Airport to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, was diverted on JFK 'for a cautious bit, after the crew reported an unusual smell and that a few customers and Crew members felt unwell "The communications team told PIX11 on Sunday.

Flight 1203 departed Newark around 6 am Sunday and was scheduled to land in Santo Domingo at around 10 am, according to JetBlue's flight tracking tool.

"The plane will be inspected before resuming service, and flight 1203 will continue to Santo Domingo with a different aircraft," said spokesman JetBlue.

The port authority confirmed that the flight to the Dominican Republic had been diverted to JFK and landed safely, adding that the incident was still under investigation.

Port sources told James Ford of PIX11 that passengers who were not taken to hospital are taken to Gate 11 at JFK Terminal 5.
