The judge authorizes the Texan florist indicted in the Capitol riot to travel to Mexico to withdraw.

A Texas florist who faces charges for participating in the riot on Capitol Hill last month may travel to Mexico later this month, a federal judge said on Friday. Jenny Louise Cudd went viral earlier this week when some reports mistakenly stated that she was allowed to travel to Riviera Maya, Mexico for a retreat. At the time, she had only applied for a travel authorization. Judge Trevor N. McFadden of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday granted his request to attend the “work-related bond retreat”.

In approving the request, McFadden said Cudd did not have a criminal history and that no one had suggested that she was at risk of absconding or that she could pose a danger to others. McFadden also pointed out that prosecutors had not opposed Cudd’s travel request. The judge ordered Cudd to “provide his itinerary to his pre-service supervising agent and to follow all other instructions provided by the pre-service.”

There is no doubt that Cudd, a florist owner who unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Midland, Texas in 2019, was inside the Capitol at the time of the riot. She broadcast a live video of herself inside the Capitol in which she says she “loaded the Capitol today with patriots.” In the video, she said that “we blew up the door to Nancy Pelosi’s office” and that she seemed happy to be part of the uprising. “Damn, yeah, I’m proud of my actions,” she said in the video.

Cudd also spoke about his involvement in local media. “Personally, I didn’t break anything,” Cudd told the Odessa American shortly after the riot. “I didn’t break down any door. I didn’t do anything violent. No one I saw had weapons of any kind. In a TV interview, Cudd did not express regret, saying she would “do it again in the blink of an eye.” In the interview with the American from Odessa, Cudd said she was not worried about the consequences of her actions “because I know I did not break the law”. Prosecutors apparently disagree with Cudd. At first, she was charged with two misdemeanors, but then they laid additional charges. A grand jury indicted Cudd on five counts.
