Richard Sherman was ordered to be released from jail Thursday after his arrest early Wednesday morning in a Seattle suburb. ESPN reported that Sherman was intoxicated and threatened to kill himself in a confrontation with family members before his arrest. Audio of 911 call, published by KIRO in Seattle, is said to be from Sherman’s wife, Ashley Moss, and helps explain the events leading up to the cornerback’s arrest.
The caller, identifying himself as “Ashley Sherman”, said Sherman was acting “intoxicated and belligerent” and “threatening to kill himself”. Sherman displayed aggressive behavior and texted people saying he was “going to hang himself.” During the call, the police were told not to shoot as Sherman told the caller he would fight the police if they arrived.
The former San Francisco 49ers defensive back was released on conditions on Thursday and was not held on bail, according to Amy Dash of CBS Sports and Audacy. Sherman must return to court on request, cannot use drugs or alcohol, cannot own firearms, and has a no-contact order with his stepfather – but not his wife. dash says Sherman’s attorney won his case for immediate release after citing Sherman’s lack of criminal history, his accomplishments in the NFL, his work in the community and with charities.
According to Dash, the state is not seeking a “burglary” charge against Sherman because he has been demoted to a felony trespass charge – which is a misdemeanor. What’s important about this is that Sherman no longer faces any felony charges.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe said Sherman attempted to break into his in-laws’ home around 2 a.m. PT. The domestic violence specification in the old burglary charge was about her relationship to the occupants of the address and “not because of violence against a family member / other significant person”.
Officers sustained minor injuries in the altercation as Sherman resisted arrest. Meanwhile, a K-9 unit was deployed to help subdue Sherman and he was taken to hospital to be examined for injuries before being booked. According to Redmond PD, Sherman suffered a minor laceration to his lower leg and ankle from the police dog. Sherman is also being investigated in a state Department of Transportation hit-and-run and property damage case. State Police said that at around 1 a.m. Pacific Time they received a report of a single-car accident in which a car struck a concrete barrier. The driver abandoned vehicle in a nearby parking lot, and when the check-in was done, it came back to Sherman.
Mousse said Seattle weather Wednesday that she wouldn’t make any sort of statement, but wanted to let everyone know that Sherman hadn’t hurt anyone.
“Right now we’re not going to make any statement except that he hasn’t hurt anyone,” Moss said. “My kids weren’t hurt in the incident. He’s a good person and he’s not his character. We’re fine, we’re just trying to get him out. I want people to know that no one was not injured. “
Wednesday, the NFLPA released this statement about Sherman, who is vice chairman of the executive committee.
“We were made aware of the arrest last night of one of our player executives for an alleged domestic violence incident and have activated our domestic violence crisis protocol for the protection and support of everyone involved. will continue to monitor events closely as more facts become available to us. “
The NFL too issued the following statement Wednesday, but did not mention Sherman by name.

Sherman had spent the past three years with the 49ers before becoming a free agent this offseason. Along with the 49ers, he was named to the Second All-Pro Team and invited to his fifth Pro Bowl in 2019, as the 49ers made it to Super Bowl LIV. Sherman is best known for his time as one of the captains of the “Legion of Boom” during his seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. The 33-year-old was due to sign with a team in the coming weeks with a training camp around the corner. According to ESPN’s Mike Triplett, the New Orleans Saints were among the potential landing points for the veteran defensive back, who has “multiple suitors.” Sherman has reportedly even discussed a potential Seattle return, but it’s likely that latest development has put it all on hold.
