The Jussie Smollett case, a "shame for our nation" – Variety

During an election campaign in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Saturday night, Donald Trump called Jussie Smollett a "third-class actor" whose high-profile case was a "shame for our nation".

"This is MAGA country," he told the crowd. "I did not hear that term until this third-class Chicago actor came out and said I was beaten by the MAGA country, can you believe it?"

"It turned out to be a total lie," he added.

Trump spoke as the White House correspondents dinner was held in Washington, DC, an event he had ignored for the past two years.

Smollett had been charged with 16 counts in February for falsely claiming he had been a victim of a racist and homophobic attack, in which he claimed that the attackers had shouted: "This is the country of MAGA ".

The Chicago General Counsel has controversially abandoned all charges against the actor, much to the surprise of police officials and the mayor of the city, Rahm Emanuel, who called it an "abomination of justice" .

On Wednesday, Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, the "stars" of Smollett, signed a letter defending the actor struggling with the problem, as well as other key players in the cast: "He's innocent … he is honest, "they wrote. Read the full letter here.
