The ground crew working for KLM at Schiphol Airport will conduct a tool descent on Monday morning between 8:00 and 10:00, the local FNV union said.

The airline's staff is fighting for more pay, more workers and better hours. Discussions between unions and management failed. FNV was asking for a 4% salary increase each year, while management offered a three-year program that would increase salaries by 6% in total over the period.

KLM believes that the strike is not necessary because its offer, presented Thursday, is still on the table. However, the union maintains that it has been subjected to an ultimatum to accept this offer and that the time is now up. The union made it clear Friday that a protest action would ensue.

The airline said it would do its best to ensure that passengers suffer as little as possible in the event of a disruption. "We would ask our passengers Sunday evening and Monday to keep abreast of information posted on the KLM website and via the KLM application," said a spokesman for the company.

The action should affect not only KLM flights, but also the flights of partner airlines, Delta and Air France. The Dutch airline has refused to say how many flights could be affected during this period, but the VRT reports that KLM and its partners have 150 scheduled flights taking off and landing during the two hours concerned.

The strike will affect all ground operations, except for registration. The union predicts that 80% of the ground staff will follow the instructions of the strike.

At the same time, a strike by security personnel at Schiphol announced today was canceled late Saturday after FNV agreed to return to the negotiating table with the airport authorities. The union declined to comment before resuming negotiations Monday, according to the Luchtvaartnieuws.nl industry website.
