Chromebooks have been technology’s best-kept secret for some time now, but that has changed dramatically in the past few years. Being lightweight, versatile, and forward thinking, Google laptops have increasingly found their way into schools, homes, and businesses. Chromebooks are really for everyone – even karate chairs and committees.
Today, we’re taking a look at five times Chromebooks have appeared in pop culture outside of Google’s own ads! We will come back to this often as there are many examples of this phenomenon, so if you’ve found a Chromebook in a movie, TV show, or anywhere else in media outside of commercials, let us know in the comments!
Cobra Kai
In season one, episode seven of Cobra Kai – “All Valley,” city council met to determine whether the team would be allowed to return to the tournament after being kicked out. And there you go, right there on the desktop is what looks like a first or second generation Samsung Chromebook 3! It was actually the first time I saw one of Google’s laptops on screen and I was very excited because of the Chromebooks.
For a businessman who is simply entering data regarding the Under-18 tournament at All Valley, a durable, inexpensive Chromebook that can be thrown away a bit is a good choice. If Johnny Lawrence were to buy a laptop we would probably recommend an educational one because they are so durable you can stand or cut them in karate!
Designated survivor
Everyone’s Favorite Fictional President – Tom Kirkman, played by Kiefer Sutherland, rocked what appears to be a Samsung Chromebook Plus v1 in an episode of Designated Survivor! What’s interesting here is that while a Chromebook is probably secure enough for surfing the web, it certainly couldn’t run the specialized software often required of government employees – let alone the President of the United States – even if these states are only fictitiously united under Netflix.
Veronica mars
On the popular show that started in 2004, starring the smart and fearless private investigator, Veronica attends a city council meeting where she attempts to bust a serial killer who is still at large and has placed bombs in the city.
Two of the consultants in attendance are using the original Samsung Plus v2 – apparently a popular choice for TV shows, and for good reason – it’s a slim, two-in-one, high-end device with a stylus. Mayor Mark Dobbins sits in the middle with his big hobbyhorse of a machine on which he presumably only deals with data entry. In fact, if you see the second screenshot below, you’ll see proof that they all do what appear to be the exact same tasks: reviewing documents.
Funny thing is, even though it’s in a context related to the story and not to laptops, he says at one point “I don’t think I’m the only one…” and turns to Chromebook owners. Yes … yes, Mr. Mayor, you are the only one. What about city council members using Chromebooks? These ladies clearly have good taste.
Geico Commercial
In a Geico commercial that started airing last year on Sunday Night Football, everyone’s favorite gecko can be seen talking to a company employee who had just finished a presentation on the savings of the company. company. Asking him to email him the slides, the unnamed person types on an older Acer Chromebook 14 in what we assume is an email body, though it doesn’t look like Gmail at all. To me it looks a lot more like the Google Workspace Admin Console, but I’m not sure. Maybe if this guy used Google Contacts and started typing “M” then Martin the Gecko would have appeared after all.

Taurus
In the episode “The Great Divide”, Danny James, played by Jaime Lee Kirchner, can be seen rocking the 2017 Google Pixelbook as she sits intently staring at the screen in her Trial Analysis Corporation (TAC) room. I sincerely wish we had more context in the tasks these on-screen characters perform with their laptops, but it’s mostly left to the imagination.
Chromebooks are inexpensive devices to buy that are readily available at your local Best Buy anytime you have a shoot to do, so it’s no wonder they’re with them. Even the Pixelbook stays on budget when you have the CBS budget. Personally, I’ve never seen this show, but you can watch the episode here if you like. It’s an interesting show that I’m going to dig deeper into thanks to its focus on court drama and psychology.
