HONOLULU (KHON2) – The largest container ship built in the United States arrived on Wednesday at the port of Honolulu.

Named in the honor of the late senior US Senator to Hawaii, Daniel K. Inouye is the first of four new vessels built for Matson to be introduced to Hawaii over the next two years.

The ship weighs more than 51,000 tons and reaches speeds of up to 23 knots.

The four vessels will incorporate a number of "green ship technologies", including a more fuel-efficient hull, bi-fuel engines that can be adapted to liquefied natural gas, environmentally friendly double-hull fuel tanks, and freshwater ballast systems.

The vessels are part of an investment of nearly one billion dollars from Matson, which also includes a project to expand and upgrade the terminal of its Sand Island plant.
