Star Wars: The Last Jedi Writer / director Rian Johnson has revealed that he toyed with the idea of including Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost in the film.
On Twitter, a fan asked if Johnson had ever considered having the ghost of Anakin’s Force communicate with Luke or Rey. “Briefly for the tree-burning scene, but Luke’s relationship wasn’t exactly anakin with Vader, which seemed to complicate things more than this moment allowed,” Johnson replied. “Yoda has felt like the most impactful teacher so far.”

In The Last Jedi, after Rey leaves Ahch-To, Luke walks up to a hollowed-out uneti tree which he says houses the sacred texts of the Jedi (in reality, the texts were stolen by Rey and stored aboard the Millennium Falcon). Just as he’s about to burn the uneti, Yoda’s Force ghost interrupts him, only to burn him himself as he teaches Luke one last Jedi lesson.
As Johnson mentioned, Luke’s only connection to Anakin we know of is from the last moments of Return of the Jedi, in which the Force ghost of a redeemed Darth Vader gazes alongside Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi as Luke and the Rebel Alliance celebrate their victory in the Galactic Civil War.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher.
