This is the end of the line for Kmart at Buffalo Niagara.

The last Kmart store in the market, 1001 Hertel Ave., will close in mid-December. A liquidation sale will begin in the middle of the month.

Hertel Avenue was listed on an unofficial list of nearly 100 Sears and Kmart condemned stores, which was distributed by an anonymous former employee and printed in USA Today. The list of closures has not been confirmed by the company, but a spokesman for the company has confirmed the closure of the Hertel Avenue store at The Buffalo News. In a statement sent by email Wednesday, the company said it took the "difficult but necessary decision" to close the store "after a thorough review."

There remains a Kmart store throughout West New York – in Wellsville, in Allegany County.

Another Kmart in Bath, Steuben County, will also close, a spokesman for the company said.

In August, the company announced that it would close its Jamestown store located at 975 Fairmount Avenue. This store should close at the end of October.

Last month, when the company announced its intention to close Jamestown Kmart stores and 25 other Sears and Kmart stores, it hinted that other closures may be underway.

"We will continue to evaluate our network of Sears and Kmart stores and we can not rule out other short-term store closures," the company said in a statement released Aug. 6. "Our goal remains to bring society back to profitability and to preserve as many jobs as possible in the communities we serve."

At that time, approximately 380 Sears and Kmart stores were in operation.

Forbes and other publications have reported significant layoffs at Sears head office and the Sears office complex in suburban Chicago is waiting for sale, citing employees who have been warned or dismissed. have seen documents confirming the claims.
