The other contestants for the game of the year are Eternal doom (which has four nominations in total), Final Fantasy VII remake (six), Ghost of Tsushima (seven), independent title Hell (eight) and Animal Crossing: New horizons (Three). Several of this year’s viral hits – including Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Among us and Genshin impact – also received several nominations.
Some of the most important games of 2020 are up for grabs in other categories, including Half-life: Alyx, Microsoft Flight Simulator and FIFA 21. There are many independent titles among the nominees, including Carrion, phasmophobia, Spelunky 2 and Spiritfarer.
There are also nominations for games that have just been released, such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, each with two nominations. Some titles that have been around for a while are awaiting awards in the current game, esports, community support, and multiplayer categories. Among them are Fortnite, No Man’s Sky, Destiny 2 and Apex Legends.
Voting is now open for this year’s Game Awards, which will be broadcast live on December 10.
