The former Red Sox slugger, David Ortiz, spoke publicly for the first time of the shooting at a Dominican nightclub that seriously injured him three months ago. In separate interviews with Univision and the Boston Globe, Ortiz, moved, recounted his near-death experience and how he began to lose hope during his recovery.
Ortiz also refuted the suppositions that he would be a target and claimed that he was not involved in anything that could have led to an attack. "I do not have enemies, I do not know why anyone would want to do that to me," he told Univision.
As for any suspicion around him, he takes it personally.
"I almost died, man," he said to Univision, tears in his eyes. "I was in a coma, people criticized me as if I deserved to be killed."
Ortiz was shot in the rear on 9 June in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz told the Globe that he had felt a "burning sensation" when he had been ambushed by the shooter at the Santo Domingo's Dial Bar and Lounge.
"People have to understand, this is not a film in which we get shot in the street and we come back two minutes later," Ortiz told The Globe. "No, I got shot and nearly died, I only have one life to live in. I can not just go to the pharmacy and buy another."
Aged 43, the doctor was operated in the Dominican Republic. The doctors took her gall bladder and part of her intestines before taking her to Boston.
He told The Globe that the recovery was slow and that he was "starting to lose hope" when he had developed a dangerous bacterial infection. He was removed from intensive care on June 22 but remained at the Massachusetts General Hospital until his release on July 26.
More than a dozen people were arrested in the Dominican Republic as part of the shooting. Dominican police said that Ortiz was not the target audience.
Ortiz said that the reason for the shooting remains a mystery. He hired Ed Davis, a former police commissioner and security analyst at CBS in Boston, to investigate.
"I want to know who did that," Ortiz told The Globe. "I will not sit and relax if there is someone who wants to kill me."
Ortiz plans to resume his role as an analyst for Fox Sports in the MLB playoffs in October and expects it to be fully restored by Thanksgiving, CBS Boston announced.
He made his first public appearance on Monday when he thrown the first ground before the Red Sox played the Yankees at Fenway Park.
