Savoring the details of game development helps me appreciate both the world of games and the people who create them. This includes the environmental design that I normally take for granted, such as the day-night cycle of a game. While the time of day can often influence the way I play a game, I rarely stop and mute. rarely stop to understand that my game world is constantly changing. So when developer Sørb posted a video showing the scenery as it goes from a bright blue to a golden hour, it not only showed me how beautiful this game is, but how we have lucky any game has a sunset.
We have beautiful views and more in Cool WIP, Polygon’s weekly roundup of eye-catching clips and screenshots of work in progress. Every week, the Polygon team scour the internet for the most interesting games still under construction, to give you a sample of the coolest projects to come.
This week we have a super-fast racer with tiny legs, a hamster platformer, a wooden boat that works like a jet ski, and a smooth 3D platformer where you jump like a frog.
A beautiful sunset
This game is made by a developer who makes games under the Internet pseudonym, Sørb. The nameless game seems inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, because it has panoramic points and climbs. In this clip, we can see the golden hour come and go, showing a full cycle from day to night in 30 seconds. If that sounds cool to you, you can check out the latest updates on Sørb’s Twitter account.
Sonic has nothing on this sprinter
I’ve seen a lot of cinematic adventures where the characters gracefully walk across open lands – The pathless and Journey to name a few. However, there is something utterly delicious and comical about it about this accelerating runner with its tiny little paws. The game is a prototype of an unannounced project by Wilhelm Nylund and while we don’t know much about it yet, you can see who the developer is. until on his Twitter account.
Mario Maker meets Hamtaro in Pompom
Pom pom is a platform and puzzle game from Tomo Camp where you play as a hamster on a trip to space. As you try to beat each level you will need to place different items like springs or platforms to help the hamster get through. It’s a cute concept with an even cuter protagonist that reminds me of the beloved pet, Hamtaro. According to one of the developers, Willem Rosenthal, a demo is coming soon.
Whip a boat like a jet ski
Whipping this little sailboat like a jet ski really looks like an explosion. A clip from developer Deniz Cetinalp shows a “procedural animated balancing system” that allows this character to spin the boat around and walk on it, just like people do in log hauling. Wacky functionality is part of No more flat days, a horrific adventure game that will cause you to flee from amorphous patches of flesh.
Yet another cool frog game
The frogs have a moment. Or at least they’re popular with independent developers. This from Chris Wade shows a fairly smooth platform as the frog rolls, dives and jumps from island to island. You can even use his tongue as a hook stroke. This game does not yet have a title or release date, but you can follow the progress of the game on their Twitter account.
