Congress women said Saturday in a joint statement that they "were denied access to the Homestead Refugee Resettlement Center."
Mucarsel-Powell and Shalala visited the shelter in February.
"During our last visit to Homestead, we saw children living in detention conditions as close as those in a prison," the statement said. "The idea of forcing even more children into an already complete detention center is not only dangerous, but also cruel and constitutes a violation of the fundamental principles of human decency."
"Denying entry to monitor the conditions and care provided to unaccompanied children housed in the Homestead Institution would not only constitute a breach of transparency and trust in the care provided, but also a violation of law. … Given the longstanding concerns raised by the lack of staff, space, education and other services in the Homestead Institution, recent announcement from the Ministry Health and Social Services [HHS] that it will significantly increase the number of beds in this place deserves immediate consideration, "added the legislators.
"The initial refusal of the Department to allow entry into this country in the current circumstances is deeply troubling.The violation of the law is never acceptable, and certainly not at this critical time", have they said.
Congress women will speak to lawmakers Monday outside the facility, whether they have access to it or not.
HHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill on the legislator's planned visit.
