INDIANAPOLIS – Larry Bird loves wall painting, but not tattoos. So he tried his luck and, as in his day, succeeded.
An artist, after being questioned by a lawyer from the former NBA star, agreed to remove some tattoos from a large painting representing Bird in a multi-family residence in Indianapolis. Tattoos include two rabbits that mate on the right arm, a cardinal on the cheek and a spider web on the shoulder.
The artist Jules Muck painted Bird in a blue basketball uniform. It's a replica of a 1977 Sports Illustrated cover when he was playing for Indiana State.
Lawyer Gary Sallee says that Bird "must protect" his brand and "does not want to be perceived as a tattooed man".
Muck told The Indianapolis Star that she had agreed to a compromise and would remove all the tattoos from Bird's wall painting except one from the word "Indiana" on her left arm.
Muck added that she added elements such as tattoos to her art to avoid creating a complete copy of a photo.
"They said that tattoos were the problem," she told Star before the new deal. "I can not make an exact replica of a photo, plus I do not want to, we'll see, it will depend on all we have to do to change it."
