As dust settles around the $ 10 million contract with Manny Machado, a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres, three things come to mind.

Good for Machado.

Good for Orioles fans.

Probably not so good for the San Diego Padres.

Machado is an extremely talented baseball player. Maybe even a player with absurd talent. He is the best defender I have watched on a daily basis (I did not see Brooks Robinson at his peak). He changes the game with his glove, especially at the third goal, where he will probably settle with the Padres (certainly if / when the young shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. becomes a star).

Machado's bat is able to lift a team for days and weeks at a time. When he is in a hollow, he is as offensive as anyone I have covered (Miguel Tejada and Chris Davis, being questionable exceptions).
