A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii on Saturday, the US Geological Survey announced.
The earthquake occurred around 17 hours. and had an epicenter located about 24 km southwest of Kailua-Kona, a town of nearly 12,000 residents located on the west coast of the island, the agency said. The earthquake had a depth of about 16 km.
There is no danger of a tsunami, said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the National Meteorological Service.
Some parts of the island may have experienced strong shocks, said the center. The United States Geological Survey has received 894 responses from people claiming to have felt the earthquake.
Hawaii Electric Light tweeted that about 3,300 customers were without electricity in the Waikoloa community, reported Hawaii News Now. The crews were working to restore power.
Civil defense officials told Hawaii News Now that the earthquake had caused the fall of a large boulder on Highway 19, Queen Kaahumanu, at the Hapuna intersection.
The news agency also reports that Captain Cook's resident, Elizabeth Cano, said on Facebook that her whole house had quaked in the earthquake.
"I always clean up the broken glass," she says.
