WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the new episode of Star Wars: The Mandalorian! Continue reading at your own risk … Today’s episode of the Disney + series The Mandalorian has already been talked about widely by Star Wars fans for several reasons. Not only did this episode deliver huge revelations about “Baby Yoda,” including her real name and backstory, but it also saw the debut of fan-favorite character Ahsoka Tano in live-action (played by Rosario Dawson in the series). As some eagle-eyed fans have noticed, the episode also saw the live-action debut of another beloved animated character, the Loth-cat.
First appearance in Star Wars Rebels (and already seen in the first season of The Mandalorian), Loth-cats are exactly what their name implies, space cats! StarWars.com describes them as follows: “Loth-cats are members of the takea family and are native to Lothal, often found in the grassy plains of the planet Outer Rim. They are capricious little creatures and, while sometimes friendly, hunters with sharp teeth and claws. “They actually appear in two shots from this week’s episode, both seen below.
The cats can be seen in the latter half of the episode as Ahsoka pulls out Magistrate Elsbeth’s henchmen, one of them even hissing at them as he walks by. The Little Beasts don’t come into contact with Baby Yoda this time around, like they did in the first season, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the talk of the town after the last episode.
After the titular bounty hunter finds Ahsoka and brings her The Child, they communicate somewhat telepathically as they are both Force-sensitive, revealing that she can understand him “in a certain way” while still revealing his real name, Grogu.
“Grogu and I can sense each other’s thoughts,” Ahsoka tells Din, revealing that Grogu, 50, was raised at the Jedi Temple in Coruscant where he was trained by many Jedi Masters. “At the end of the Clone Wars, when the Empire came to power, it was in hiding. Someone took him from the Temple. Then his memory becomes… dark. He seemed lost. Alone.
Fortunately for Grogu and all of us, he is no longer alone.
