A team of VFX artists took it upon themselves to present their own take on a crucial scene in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian.

The Corridor Crew YouTube channel discussed the technology that helped shape the Luke Skywalker cameo in “The Rescue” and how to improve it. The majority of the process used the highly controversial deepfake technology to recreate Hamill’s face. Corridor Crew had posted another video in which they offered their reactions to the official cameo – and they weren’t too excited about the final product.

During the events of “The Rescue”, Luke Skywalker appeared to aid Din Djarin and his companions as they were cornered by a platoon of Dark Troopers. After defeating the Dark Troopers, Skywalker offered to train the Force-sensitive child in the ways of the Force – leading to a tearful farewell from Djarin. Mark Hamill, who played Skywalker in the original Star wars trilogy and sequel trilogy, reprized his role as Skywalker. Skywalker’s appearance in The Mandalorian leads to mixed reactions from Star wars fans, with his digitally edited face being the most polarizing element.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney +.
