Hollywood studios continue to hold back their biggest films amid the ongoing pandemic.

Liam Neeson’s action thriller The sniper remained atop the languid domestic box office in its second weekend with an estimated $ 2 million.

There have been no further large-scale releases as most Hollywood studios continue to delay their high-profile titles amid COVID-19 and continue to close theaters, including in the 10 main film markets. While the smaller markets reopened this month, it hasn’t done much. So far, January ticket sales are more than 90% behind last year, according to Comscore.

The sniper is run by longtime Clint Eastwood collaborator Robert Lorenz and has earned $ 6.1 million in its first 10 days. Open Road, also the home of the recent photo of the Neeson pandemic Honest Thief, manages the film nationally.

Universal Animation and DreamWorks The Croods: The New Age was not far behind The sniper. The family-friendly animated film grossed $ 1.9 million in its ninth weekend for a nationwide total of $ 41.8 million and $ 139.8 million worldwide.

Croods 2 held up well in theaters despite its availability in premium VOD in the United States

Wonder Woman 1984 came third in his fifth weekend with $ 1.6 million for a nationwide total of $ 37.7 million. Abroad, it grossed $ 110.3 million for a worldwide total of $ 148 million.

In a controversial move, Warners WW84 made the Christmas Day Superhero sequel available on HBO Max and in theaters the same day due to the COVID-19 crisis and closed theaters in many major markets.

At the international box office, Disney’s Soul posted strong openings in North Korea – where it marked the second-largest pandemic onset for a non-Korean title – and Russia. The Pixar title has now grossed $ 71.2 million at the overseas box office in 13 hardware markets, including $ 48.2 million in China.

Soul only plays on Disney + in the US and select international markets.
