There are several moments in Masked singer story set in the show’s Hall of Crazy Shame: Sarah “The Bear” Palin doing “Baby Got Back”, Mickey “The Gremlin” Rourke beheading himself, Wendy Williams doing an obscure disco song and being confused by Ken Jeong with Mariah Carey. Now add to that crazy list the performance of this week’s Group A semifinals by the most recent Season 6 playoff, the overgrown wildcard, the baby, who croaked such a nightmarish performance, it was almost too weird for a basic cable. “I’m speechless. I don’t know what to say,” Ken gasped.
The baby turned out to be the redneck comic Larry the Cable Guy, whose distorted view of the Flintstones the theme was barely recognizable (Judge Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg didn’t even recognize Larry, although she starred with him in the 2008 straight-to-cable movie Protection without intelligence). But, as host Nick Cannon noted, Larry has “one of the most recognizable voices of our generation.” The comedian confessed: “This is the first time that I really sing something in front of someone”, and I hope it will be the last (at least I would not advise him to quit his day job), but he definitely seemed to have a yabba dabba doo time during his fun, in short Masked singer Course.
As for the Group A candidates who qualified for the next round – including another upcoming wildcard, the Pepper – their identities remain a mystery. But let’s assess their performance and continue the guessing game:
The Taurus, “Circus”
It’s Britney, Taurus! Showing his support for Britney Spears (he even improvised, “Free Britney!” At one point), this ringmaster showed off his pop chops and was an accomplished performer. “I want to see this 20 more times!” Jenny exclaimed.
The clues: He is “no stranger to a house party” famous for throwing crazy parties. Other clues this Wednesday included Carnegie Hall (who made Judge Robin Thicke think she might be a Broadway star) and “rapping.” Past clues that have included Walt Disney Concert Hall, a “little town surrounded by cows”, and Forbes magazine. He also said his “secret weapon” was dancing.
The judges’ assumptions: Trey Songz, Donald Glover, Anthony Ramos, Leslie Odom Jr.
My guess: I’m still convinced that this little Texas town, Disney-obsessed, Britney fan, dynamite dancer and Forbes Todrick Hall, winner of “30 Under 30”. He starred in Broadway productions (from Kinky Boots and Chicago), and his last gig was called… wait… the Haus Party Tour! I am Of course Judge Nicole Scherzinger plays the idiot and actually recognizes Todrick’s undisguised singing voice, since it appeared in his musical film Straight out of Oz.
The hamster, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”
The clues: When he was in his twenties, he “lived in a huge city”, “worked with the best friends” and had “the most fun” ever. He rose to fame overnight, but he and his buddies are still “friends all those years later.” Past clues have included baseball, Alcatraz Island, goldfish, and jeweled DJ headphones. He also mentioned that he had a “hamster-shaped” body.
The judges’ assumptions: Will Ferrell, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Jim Breuer, John Leguizamo, Paul Rudd.
My guesses: The judges are convinced that this is a comedic actor, and they might be right. This could to be famous FriendMatthew Perry. The body shape matches, as does the self-deprecating humor, and the voice sounds a bit like Matthew’s! (If only it was the Bullfrog, then I’ll be sure it was him.) But I still think it could be – listen to me! – Northern California rapper superstar and former Oakland A batboy MC Hammer. (You understand? Ham-Following?)
The Skunk, “Midnight Train to Georgia”
This classic and elegant performance garnered a massive standing ovation from the audience and burst Jenny into “skunk chills”. Robin declared Skunk his favorite singer in the six Masked singer seasons, and Nicole proclaimed, “We are in the midst of a young living legend!”
The clues: She went to parties “with the most iconic people in the world” and was “the hostess with most women”, but left it all behind for a “simpler, more positive life”. She also mentioned the word “empire” and pulled out an old-fashioned boombox playing gospel music. Past clues have mentioned dropping out of a scholarship when she got pregnant, a career break, reputation for being volatile and Seoul (or maybe just “the soul”?).
The judges’ assumptions: Taraji P. Henson, Queen Latifah, Tamar Braxton.
My guess: It’s absolutely Faith Evans. Faith attended Fordham University on a scholarship, but dropped out after a year to have her daughter; she takes years between albums and hasn’t released a full studio LP since 2014; she once had a bad reputation for her peripheral involvement in the East Coast / West Coast hip-hop feud of the 1990s; she once judged a guest Empire-themed episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race; and it has roots in the gospel. In addition, the Skunk sounds a parcel like faith. It’s her.
Pepper, “jealous”
This spicy new character’s packet of clues positioned her as some sort of flash social media sensation, so I was shocked at her truly amazing voice. Nicole, with tears in her eyes, described the performance as “absolutely beautiful and breathtaking”, and Robin raved: “Beyond a doubt of the season, it was incredible.”
The clues: She “always had her own flavor,” but something she did went viral overnight. Now she “strikes while the iron is hot”. We also saw X’s and O’s (which the judges said referred to TikTok), a reimagined Hollywood sign that spelled “Chiliwood” and a pair of roller skates, because “if you have roller skates you do not need a driver’s license. “
The judges’ assumptions: Kesha, Olivia Rodrigo, Hailey Steinfeld, Lady Gaga, Pink, Miley Cyrus.
My guess: It is not Olivia, guys. It’s about Natasha Bedingfield, whose debut anthem “Unwrite” has had a resurgence on TikTok this year and has inspired a viral dance craze. This Chiliwood sign is a nod to another TV show that made the song famous, The hills, and Natasha’s comeback album in 2019, Ride with me, had a single called “Roller Skate”. And so it is written: Pepper is Mrs. Bedingfield.
