The first major Xbox Series X / S console exclusive, The Medium, arrives tomorrow, but how does the game compare technically? The game features an innovative split-screen mechanic, with players exploring two worlds at the same time, but it’s also rather old-school, with fixed camera angles and rather deliberate classic survival horror gameplay. ‘is therefore an interesting test case. Thankfully, Digital Foundry tech leads have put the game to the test on Xbox Series X and S. You can check out their full video below, provided you have around 20 minutes.
The Medium offers dynamic resolution on consoles, the range being much wider than usual given the game’s unique dual-screen gameplay. In single-screen mode, The Medium goes from full 4K to around 1440p on Xbox Series. X and between 1080p and 900p on Xbox Series S. Unfortunately things really take a hit when the split screen kicks in – on the X series the resolution can drop as low as 900p and on the S series it boils down to a sub-HD 648p.
At least the game mainly maintains 30fps on Xbox Series X and S, although DF saw very brief drops to 20fps, possibly due to background loading. Unfortunately, the game appears to have some serious frame rate issues, with stuttering being a constant companion. Additionally, DF confirmed the odd issue with the pre-rendered cutscenes having their gamma set much too high, which many noticed in the pre-launch footage, present in the final game.

The way [tries] to invoke the divided realities of Silent Hill and rely on those feelings of longing and longing for something new from Team Silent. […] Marianne could perhaps jump between two realities, but The Medium is stuck somewhere between being a worthy successor to Silent Hill and another mediocre hide-and-seek horror game.
