Matt McQuaid and Cassius Winston would not leave Michigan State basketball lose again to Michigan.

And the Spartans are now alone at the top of the Big Ten rankings.

The two guards made critical shots, assists and an assist in the wake, helping to ignite a 17-4 run that led the 10th MSU to a 77-70 win over the No. 7 Wolverines on Sunday after lunch at Crisler Center.

Winston scored 19 of his 27 points after half-time and had eight assists, and McQuaid added 13 points and five rebounds. Great men Kenny Goins and Xavier Tillman combined 30 points and 16 rebounds, less than Michigan counterparts Iggy Brazdeikis and Jon Teske (26 points, 20 rebounds).

Winston scored 9 of the 10 free throws at the last minute and won his individual duel with Zavier Simpson (19 points, five rebounds, two assists), helping MSU to end a three-game losing streak against U-M.

The Spartans (23-5, 14-3 Big Ten) advance half a game ahead of Purdue at the top of the Big Ten, the Wolverines (24-4, 13-4) falling in third place.

Even start

Winston had eight points and five assists playing the 20 minutes, but it was Goins who produced the staggering statistics at half-time.

The 6-foot-7 athlete hit 3 of 4 in the 3-point range and scored 13 points in the first half. His block counterpart, second student Xavier Tillman, had eight points and three rebounds.

That helped counter a solid half for Michigan's big men, Jon Teske and Ignas Brazdeikis, who combined for 13 points and 11 rebounds. They were helped by the defensive switching of MSU screens, which left the Spartan guards exposed to internal mismatches.

But the two teams exchanged punches and run halfway. Each shot 5 out of 12 from 3 points. Both shots went well – MSU achieved 56% overall versus 43.3% for U-M. There was a reversal of roles and the Wolverines managed a rebound (17-12), while the Spartans made only four turnovers and forced seven.

MSU led no less than seven in the first period, and McQuaid's second pointer and Tillman's free throw pair proved the difference as the Spartans were 39-37 ahead at the break.

From back to back

Michigan scored 15-6 at half-time as MSU's defense struggled to defend Brazdeikis. His dunk after dominating the turn at the corner of Goins put the Wolverines up 51-45 with 15:42 to play and gave them the biggest lead of the afternoon.

However, MSU was back behind Winston and McQuaid, who set up the Tillman and Thomas Kithier baskets to create a 17-2 record.

Co-Captain McQuaid's savvy shooter earned him three free throws, and then Winston managed to block traffic after coming out of a screen. He then fed Tillman for another layup, and Aaron Henry made some clutch passes and free throws in the sequence. Winston ended the match by coaching Zavier Simpson to allow MSU to go up to 62-57, while he remained 5:34.

The Wolverines continued to incriminate Winston at the last minute and the junior point guard scored 9 of 10 on the line to help the Spartans win their first win at Ann Arbor since 2016.
