Ministry of Justice Officials Prepare for Special Counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud Mueller's choice to lead the investigation on Russia to publish a report on his investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election as early as next week, according to several reports.

CNN reported Wednesday night that the report could be released next week, citing people familiar with the plans. The Washington Post, citing people familiar with the talks, reported Wednesday that DOJ officials thought a confidential report could be released in the coming days.

The Post also announced that Mueller could hand in his report next week to new Attorney General William Barr.

The reports come a few hours after CNN announced that Barr could announce the conclusion of the Mueller inquiry as early as next week.

Mueller investigates Russia's interference in the elections and a possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Mueller is required to submit a report to the Attorney General at the end of his investigation, although this report is not required to be made public, CNN noted. The report also asks Mueller to explain his reasoning for whether or not to pursue the named persons in his conclusions.

The DOJ and the special advocate's office did not immediately return the requests for comments from The Hill.

It is not clear whether Mueller's final report will be made public. Democratic legislators have called for the report to be made available to Congress and the public, but Barr has not committed to it.

In his confirmation hearing, Barr stated that he would make the report public as much as he could on the basis of the law.

Mueller has charged or obtained guilty pleas from several former Trump associates.
