The ‘miscommunication’ that cost LA Dwight Howard

Former Los Angeles Lakers big man Dwight Howard has decided to part ways with Los Angeles and has now reportedly put pen to paper on a new deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to signing with the Sixers, Howard was on track to sign an extension with the Lakers. This never materialized, and it turned out to be caused by an obvious case of miscommunication.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Howard’s botched extension to LA “is due to miscommunication somewhere.” He also details how Howard was apparently kept in the dark as the Lakers tried to iron out their offer:

Lakers management have informed Howard’s agent that they must review team ownership and seek approval before making a formal offer, sources said. Howard waited almost an hour with no response, sources said. Communication was strictly between the Lakers front office and Howard’s agent, sources said.

Howard already felt that a $ 3 million deal was already on the table, prompting him to send his now-deleted tweet indicating his intention to stay in Hollywood. As Lakers executives took their time on the Howard deal, the Sixers rushed in, with reports also indicating that big-man superstar Joel Embiid was also involved in recruiting Howard.

It’s still not clear if the Lakers were really going to offer Howard an extension, but at this point it’s water under the bridge. They have since evolved and have been replaced by reigning sixth man of the year winner Montrezl Harrell.
