GAS CITY, Ind. (WPTA21) – If you have children, you know that they can be a handful.
But what could a 10-year-old girl be so blatant as to lead her mother-in-law to strangle her?
We spoke with experts to better understand this terrible tragedy and whether the woman had shown warning signs.
"If anyone went through that, what would be your first clue? You go get the child. You would not act like you did not care. I mean, I'm not saying anything too naughty, but that makes no sense, "said neighbor neighbor Sunny Osborn.
Nothing about Skylea Carmack's death makes sense, especially for Osborn, who said that 34-year-old Amanda Carmack appeared to have been detached from the frantic quest for the missing girl.
"Why would not she look for her daughter-in-law? What would happen if he was one of his children? I would be outside looking. Even if it was not my child, I would look outside, "she says.
Carmack has published several times a week on his Facebook page, but never on the fact that Skylea was gone.
And the community that was searching en masse for the missing girl turned on Carmack, posting hateful messages all over her page, including this one: "We spent hours looking for Skylea on Sunday while you sat and posted well in your world.You are a disgusting monster and I am really sick of learning that you have acted that way. "
According to Carmack's Facebook publications, it seems that her husband was often on the move, leaving up to seven children in his care, aged about 13 to 3 years.
Carmack also wrote several times about being depressed and caring for a child who was just a handful, saying, "I'm at the end of the line with this one."
According to Dr. Stephen Ross, forensic psychologist, being overwhelmed by lack of sleep and support can be exhausting.
"It's not a factor, it's a confluence of many factors. You do not see a thing that says I'm going to kill you. And then, you may end up becoming psychotic, then you will be out of touch, and you will do. You can end up killing your child, "he says.
"It's never okay to take your anger and frustration away from a child," says SCAN's Dee Szyndrowski, or Stop Child Abuse and Neglect.
Szyndrowski says she can see how much support up to seven children would be an overwhelming task.
"I do not disagree with his posts on Facebook. My sadness is that she did not go for help for that. Or none of his friends on his Facebook page has asked for help for her, "she says.
She says that one of the worst consequences of Carmack's arrest is that the rest of the children will have to manage him for the rest of his life.
Experts say that if you are in trouble, there is no shame in asking for help.
