A shiny metal monolith has been spotted in Southern California that appears similar to one found in the Utah Desert.
It is not known who placed the sparkling structure atop the Pine Mountain Loop hiking trail in Atascadero, Fox affiliate KKFX in San Luis Obispo reported Wednesday. The tall silver column has drawn hikers to the area after photos were posted on social media.
“I’m sure it wasn’t here yesterday,” hiker Dennis Swanson told the TV station.
At least two other monoliths have been spotted elsewhere. A similar structure that officials said was made of riveted stainless steel plates gained international attention after wildlife officials stumbled upon it in southeast Utah, planted in the distinctive red rock of the region.
He disappeared a few days later just as mysteriously as he looked.
“I think he went missing from Utah and landed right here in Atascadero,” hiker Blake Huhn told KKFX.
The Utah monolith had been placed on public land without permission. Local station KSTU-TV reported that the structure was overturned by a group of people who said “leave no trace.”
“Right after he fell and made a thud, one of them said, ‘That’s why you don’t leave trash in the desert,’” Colorado photographer Ross Bernards told the Salt Lake City TV station.
Visitors to the isolated spot left behind a mess of human waste and debris and parked their cars on the vegetation, officials said.
In Romania, a journalist from a local publication reported that a monolith was also missing after being found on a hill. A local official said the structure was also installed without permission.
