Marie Kondo is so ubiquitous that she has become a verb – as in "Marie-Kondo-ing your closet" – a verb that describes the decluttering and cleansing action.
"I have a goal," Kondo, 34, told Tim Ferriss in his podcast "The Tim Ferriss Show," in June. "My dream is to organize the world."
And she may be on the right track: as a storage consultant, author, and star of Netflix's "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo," her brand has become synonymous with the satisfying sense of streamlining your business. life to maximize joy and productivity.
So how did Marie Kondo start her day to prepare for success?
First of all, she salutes her house.
"After I wake up, I focus on the house, for example, I say hello to my house," Kondo told Ferriss through a translator (Kondo speaks Japanese).
She "wakes up" usually at 6:30, she says.
"Of course, I also say hello to my family members, then I opened all the windows and circulated the air," Kondo said.
She also does a little physical activity.
"I do yoga in the morning, so I feel very organized and refocused when I do that," she says. "I do my yoga from a book I bought in Japan … I take about 20 minutes."
Then she has breakfast.
"And of course, as you know I have children, I prepare their breakfast," says Kondo.
What she eats at breakfast depends on the time of year and her mood.
"In the summer, I love to prepare cold-pressed juices. In the winter we eat a lot of Japanese breakfasts. It's really good for health and it's healthy. It consists of a soup rice and miso, "said Kondo. "It really depends on the day, so, for example, I'll have Japanese omelettes or leftovers from the night before.I really do not have a set menu for my breakfast, I do what I think to be good and good for that day. "
Always in the morning, Kondo cleans the floor in front of the door to the outside.
"In Japan, there is a concept of really cleaning the floor of your entrance, so I do it too," Kondo said. "I am wiping it.In Japan, there is a clear division between the outside entrance, between the inside and the outside. The entrance is the place where you can somehow dust off everything you have accumulated on the outside. "
The idea of showing a thoughtful and intentional respect for physical objects defines Kondo's philosophy, both in his work and at home.
When she comes home after going out, "after greeting my family, I say to my house," Hello, I'm at home. "Then I return the items in my bag to their place of residence," said Kondo.
"Each article has a place, I return them to their place and I communicate of course with them too."
