The morning show kicks off Season 2 around New Years Eve 2020, and it’s a fitting metaphor for what’s to come for Alex, Bradley, Cory, and everyone else: a blissful ignorance of the exact worsening of circumstances.
I mean both at the character level and for the world in general. Most of us in the United States had no idea, at the stroke of midnight on January 1, how much our lives would change around this time the following year. Likewise, after a brief nod to the emptiness of New York City during the pandemic, the title card takes us back to December 2019, when the UBA gang is far more concerned with who owns the anchor chair than with who owns the anchor chair. find out how they will survive a global pandemic.
And what does Alex do, after quitting in a very dramatic – and visible – way? She is chopping wood in a cabin in Maine. And she finished. Truly. Seriously. DON’T EVEN ASK HIM TO COME BACK, okay? Read on for highlights from “My Least Favorite Year.”
CORY FAILURE | Immediately after the bombshell that ended Season 1 airs, Cory is fired and Fred is put on administrative leave. Cory gives a bombastic speech to executives on his exit; “It’s a battle for the soul of the universe! He proclaims at one point.
Then the action returns to December 31, 2019, as Bradley and his new Morning show co-presenter Eric (Patriot Act with Hasan MinajHasan Minaj’s performs a squeaky (although true) rendition of “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” to promote their welcome of the drop ball in Times Square the following evening. Bradley’s hair is now blonde, which she apparently did – along with the song and the literal dance – to prove that she is a companion girl who is ready to do as she is asked. But the odds are down and everyone is on edge.
Despite being fired, Cory is not only back in the UBA building, but running the place. Wait what? He’s all enlightened on the UBA + streaming service he plans to launch soon, so he barely hears Bradley when she arrives at his office and makes a point of asking to move into the late-night news anchor seat. which recently became vacant. She also points out that she’s the one who got her fired, but we don’t have much more on that for a while.
ALEX, ALONE | In a cabin in the snow, Alex is working on his book. She sends the completed manuscript to her agent, who is unhappy with the way Ms. Levy has chosen to gloss over a rather interesting part of her life. “Dig a little deeper into some areas… about Mitch,” she suggests, adding that Maggie Brenner is also writing a book. If there’s a “personal story” between Mitch and Alex, the agent adds, now is the time to take action.
Soon after, Cory shows up, uninvited or announced, and asks her to come back for a year. He gives it the hard sell, claiming that the network is going to “rise like Venus out of the shell, and YOU ARE VENUS!” And while the first and second seasons of this series are confusing to me about the choices made, I will never turn down the absolutely bat-eyed line reads of Billy Crudup. They soothe my soul.
Unfortunately for Cory, Alex is much less moved than I am. “I’d rather die than go back, okay?” “, she says. “Well, think about it,” he replies. (He h.)
AULD KNOWLEDGE | On New Years Eve, on a platform in Times Square, Eric’s conscience takes over and he tells Bradley what almost everyone already knows: he, not her, is the next TV presenter. evening news from UBA. Meanwhile, in Maine, Alex goes to a neighbor’s house for a party and has a consultation with a famous psychic (played by Hocus pocus‘Kathy Najimy) getting everything wrong… except when she says, “You carry a crippling amount of guilt. Alex leaves just before midnight, and as she stands outside the party, she receives a voicemail message from Cory that says “You haven’t done your biggest job yet.” She starts to cry and calls him back. “Could you please come back and fill in until you’re ready to launch your new prime-time show?” ” he asks. She doesn’t say yes but agrees to speak the next day. “Cory, can I trust you?” she asks in tears. “Yes,” he replies, and the messed-up-rom-com nature of this scene is intense. After hanging up, she smiles.
Cory had told Alex they were in a bind because a deal had failed on a replacement Morning show anchor, but that was a lie; after hanging up with her, he calls Stella, the new head of the news division (played by Russian doll‘s Greta Lee), and tells her to kill the case for the new person. But before he can gloat too much, he looks up and notices a Midtown TTY machine, which informs him that Hannah Shoenfeld’s family have filed a wrongful death complaint against the network.
SOMEWHERE ELSE… | In case you were wondering about the other characters: Chip produces news at a local station and has a girlfriend; Yanko meets one of Claire’s friends and learns that she is studying for the GRE; and the new coronavirus we’ll call COVID-19 is causing a lot of trouble in China, but Mia decides it’s not important enough news to be covered in a recap during the broadcast.
