A 20,000-square-foot California mansion is up for auction – and with an asking price of $ 160 million, it could become the most expensive home to ever come under a hammer.

The 13-bedroom Villa Firenze is located on more than 9 acres of land in Beverly Hills and is accessible via its own private street, according to Concierge Auctions, which manages the sale. The house has vaulted ceilings, multiple fireplaces, and 25 bathrooms, while the larger estate includes three separate guest houses.

The gated mansion is located in the exclusive North Beverly Park neighborhood, home to celebrities such as Rod Stewart, Denzel Washington and Sylvester Stallone, according to a press release.

Designed by Californian architect William Hablinski, the property is described by the auction house as an “authentic Italian village”.

Outdoor facilities include a jogging track, swimming pool, jacuzzi, pool house, tennis court and a yard large enough for 30 cars.

“It is truly a masterpiece that it is quite possible that impossible to recreate,” said the owner of the property in the press release. “Many of the world’s most desirable and coveted items are auctioned off – and like these, Villa Firenze is also a work of art in itself.”

The lavish home was listed by Hilton & Hyland realtors at $ 160 million, which, if completed, would make it the most expensive residential property to ever auction, Concierge Auctions said.

Despite the apparent risk, auction house chairman Chad Roffers said auctions may be a better bet for people selling properties in the higher end of the market.

“For properties valued at over $ 10 million – let alone over $ 100 million – the pool of buyers is extremely limited, which typically leads to months and years in the market. Roffers said in an email interview, adding the traditional selling method has its limitations.

In 2018, before being auctioned, Villa Firenze went up for sale with an asking price of $ 165 million.

“In Beverly Hills, the average number of days on the market in 2019 was 324,” Roffers said. “Our research shows that if a luxury property hasn’t sold within 90 days, it will likely stay on the market for the next three to five years and eventually sell for a fraction of the original price.”

The auction will take place online, over eight days, starting January 26.
