At least 50 people were hit by a bullet in Chicago this weekend, the most violent of the year with a record even higher than during the long leave of Memorial Day a week earlier.
More than half of the victims were injured during a 12-hour shootout from Friday night to Saturday morning. At least four of the 31 people shot by wounds during this period have died as a result of attacks on the west and south sides. By the end of the weekend, at least 10 people had died, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The level of violence eclipsed that of the three-day Memorial Day weekend, during which at least 43 people were shot dead, including seven deadly. In a statement on Sunday night, the department's chief spokesman said Johnson had ordered "targeted patrols" in areas of potential gang retaliation. "These efforts have resulted in 19 arrests for firearms and 81 illegal seizures since Friday night," said Anthony Guglielmi. "Several people of interest are also interviewed about some of our incidents and the detectives have good video tracks in others."
The most recent weekend homicides occurred on Sunday morning in the Old Town neighborhood, in the North Triangle area. According to the police, two men were found dead around 6 am in a car hit by at least a dozen bullets in block 100, West North Avenue.
The driver, 22-year-old Tavion Matthews, was shot in the back and one passenger, Marcus Walker Jr., 25, was shot and wounded. They were declared dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Both lived in the old city.
The two men were shot dead when at least two people in a white car heading west on North Avenue opened fire, police said. The gunmen went north on LaSalle Street, the police said.
Less than two hours ago, 26-year-old Denise Weekly was shot dead in block 4900 South Princeton Avenue in Fuller Park, south of the city, police said. She was struck in the chest and taken to the University of Chicago hospital where she died, police said.
On Saturday morning, four people were shot dead in the Gold Coast neighborhood and, a few hours later, four more people were shot dead in the Austin district of the West Side.
At the first shot, at around 2 am, two men standing in front of a red van in block 300 east of Chicago Avenue heard gunshots and saw several cars spinning at high speed. They were both injured and went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, about one block away, the police said.
One of the men, 28, was shot in the legs and the other, 26 in the buttock. Both were stabilized, the police said.
Two other men, aged 28 and 25, were also shot and left in a Toyota silver sedan until they reported an ambulance at Cermak Road and State Street, the police said. police. Aged 28, he was seriously injured in the head and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized. The 25-year-old was shot in the head and stabilized at Stroger Hospital.

A 17-year-old boy was also injured in his lower back and stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. An 18-year-old man was shot in the neck and was reported to be in critical condition in Stroger. A 22-year-old man was shot in the arm and stabilized at Mount Sinai, police said.
The police stated that they did not know who the targeted target (s) were or whether the four knew each other.
The last shootout this weekend took place Monday morning in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, in the southern part. A 27-year-old woman was inside a red Toyota sedan with a man when the two men started arguing, police said. The man sprayed the woman with pepper and shot her one leg. She was taken to the Medical Center of the University of Chicago in good condition, police said.
The youngest gunshot victim on the weekend was a 16-year-old injured boy in the Little Village neighborhood. Around 8:10 pm, the teenager was walking north into the 2,200 block of South California Avenue when another man brandished a handgun and opened fire, police said.
The 16-year-old was hit in the right shoulder and taken to the Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.
