It is undeniable that this offseason will be very tight for the Pittsburgh Steelers in terms of salary cap. The problem is compounded by the fact that the squad has several top players who strike free will with very little chance of signing them.
The misconception many fans have is that this salary cap facing the Steelers is somehow the fault of the front office or worse yet the players. Pittsburgh has always run its business the same way, the only change this season has been a significant reduction in the salary cap due to loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yes, some teams have huge amounts of salary cap space this offseason despite the cuts. It was going to be there anyway. And in most cases, with a few exceptions, these teams are generally not competitive. Their ownership is more concerned with their bottom line than with wins and losses. On the other side, you have the Steelers always spending the cap and pushing it to the limit. It turns out that this offseason, the NFL has shifted goals slightly.
The Steelers have a storm to get through this offseason. No doubt about it. However, it is not a problem of their creation. Pittsburgh will continue the restructurings started with Cam Heyward, work out a new contract for Ben Roethlisberger and continue the plan. Pittsburgh never digs much in the first free agency round and this time around will be no different. There will be money for the draft and to pick up a few mid-level guys after the fact. The Steeler way.
