Google’s Nest Cam IQ Outdoor was discontinued because the Google Store sold through the last of its stock. Don’t worry if you were hoping to grab one, as Google is also confirming that a whole new line of security cameras are expected to land later this year. However, the recently sold out model will continue to benefit from software updates and feature support.

Stock of the $ 399 IP Nest Cam IQ Outdoor has fluctuated across Google’s various regional storefronts over the past few weeks. Google has since confirmed that it was “out of stock” of the product, which will no longer be available for purchase through the Google Store, although it will continue to receive updates (as we hope given the price ). In our review, we found this to be a capable smart home security camera with top-notch video quality and features, although the price is an issue – not that it matters now. Although some third-party retailers still sell them, it looks like the camera has been discontinued.

That brings us to this latest development: According to a statement provided to 9to5Google, confirmed by Google, a new set of smart home cameras will debut later this year. A Google spokesperson told us: “Nest will continue to invest in new innovations, including a new line of security cameras for 2021.” Further details on the range were not provided, but hopefully they will fetch a more competitive price than the current models.

Google clearly knew that pricing for its smart home suite was a problem, as last year it revamped Nest Aware’s pricing to make it more affordable per camera (although the change wasn’t for the better. ). Other hardware products in the current lineup range from $ 129 for the basic Nest Cam Indoor to $ 300 for the Nest Cam IQ Indoor. That’s a lot more than the cost of many other Assistant-compatible cameras, especially given the random glitches they encounter. Other smart home companies like Wyze have undercut Google by a literal order of magnitude on the price of their Assistant cameras, so we have to assume Google is paying attention.

Just a few days ago, a new and probable Nest-branded device hit the FCC. We don’t know what it is, but it packs a display, Soli and Zigbee technology – maybe a successor to Nest Secure or a new smart display, or both? Either way, it could be part of the new lineup when it lands. And since the time between the appearance and launch of FCC is usually only a month or two, we may not have too much time to wait.
