The network – who are do not Green Day Under Their Masks – debuted late Friday night with a virtual performance of “Threat Level Midnight” on Tonight’s show.
Although the network looks a lot like Green Day, and their drummer wearing a luchador mask looks a lot like Tre Cool, and they’re also signed to the same label as Green Day (Warner Records), the sleepy new wave band has long insisted since their formation in 2003 that they are not a side project of Green Day.
The mysterious group released their first album in 2003 Silver Silver 2020, opened a few shows for Green Day and then disappeared, to return in December 2020 with Money Money 2020 Part II: We told you!, which includes “Threat Level Midnight”.
Tonight’s show the performance itself, apparently filmed on VHS, appears to have been recorded from a public television talk show in the ’80s, with the costumed network wreaking havoc on the soundstage. The only thing that bases the performance on a recent decade is that the song is named after an episode of Office.
In other unrelated news, Green Day released a new song earlier this week titled “Here Comes the Shock,” the group’s first new music since their own 2020 album. Father of all …
