The new Apple 13-inch MacBook Pro has it all

A few days ago, Apple refreshed the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the basic model, and destroyed the 12-inch MacBook. Let's take a look at the new features and behavior of the basic MacBook Pro model.

Familiar design with new internals

In terms of overall design, this is the same MacBook Pro that we've seen since its debut in 2016, but with the addition of the Apple T2 chip, the True Tone screen, and it's also equipped with Apple's new third-generation butterfly keyboard. We will not dive too deeply into these new keyboards since we have already covered them in the past.

Whether replacing the function keys with the touch bar is good or not is an exercise for the reader.

The new basic model of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is equipped with a quad-core 1.4GHz i5 processor that optimizes up to 3.9 GHz. Otherwise, it can be upgraded to purchase an e7 quad-core processor running at 1.7 GHz, capable of boosting up to 4.5 GHz.

The one we have here is the basic configuration model equipped with the 1.4GHz quad-core i5 processor, a 128GB SSD, 8GB RAM and the Intel Iris Plus 645 graphics processor. 13-inch MacBook Pro costs $ 1299 before taxes.

Geekbench 4 single and multiple scores

Starting with Geekbench, you can see that our machine got a single-threaded score of 4761 and a multi-core score of 16932. Comparing this score to the $ 1799 MacBook Pro to $ 1799 with a quad-core i5 processor, this machine a simple score of 4993 and a multi-core score of 18283.

Cinebench R20 Score

Turning now to Cinebench R20, in our tests, the 13-inch MacBook Pro had a score of 1583 CPU, which is not bad at all at this price. For comparison, the $ 1799 MacBook Pro at $ 1799 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports had a processor score of 1779.

Unigine Heaven results

All configured by default, we decided to run Unigine Heaven repeatedly to determine the performance of the Intel Iris Plus 655 graphics under load. The new 13-inch MacBook Pro has a score of 784 and an average frame rate of 31.1 with a maximum frame rate of 66.7.

If you want to play on your Mac or rely heavily on the graphics card, we recommend choosing an external graphics solution. We also suggest enclosures if you follow this procedure.

SSD is slower, but not the slowest

Turning now to BlackMagic's disk speed test, the 1399-inch, 13-inch MacBook Pro, exceeds the standard 495 MB / s for write speeds and approximately 1350 MB / s for read speeds. This is not the fastest disc offered by Apple, but it's still better than a rotating hard drive.

Final Cut Pro

If you're a video creator and curious about the performance of Final Cut Pro X, we've compiled five minutes of 4K H.264 footage, then added a color calibration and exported the same timeline multiple times with rendering background. And with this feature enabled, we got an exported file in just 2 minutes and 45 seconds and with background rendering turned off, the video was exported in 10 minutes and 26 seconds.

The T2 chip helps some encoding work. We have already talked about it, but since the 2017 model is equipped with the T1 chip, there will be significant differences between coding times and the old model. We will examine this further for our comprehensive review.

Like its counterpart at $ 1799, we do not personally recommend changing anything above 1080p on this basic MacBook Pro model, as 4K playback slows down from time to time. But, if you are patient, it is still able to edit 4K, provided you optimize your media beforehand or edit with proxy files. Doing this may take additional storage space and if you plan to edit 4K videos, we strongly recommend that you choose an external storage solution, especially with this basic 128GB SSD configuration.

The new base model 2019 MacBook Pro 2019 is a much cheaper entry in the range of Apple laptops Pro. It now features the Apple T2 chip, the touch bar, the True Tone keyboard and Apple's new third-generation butterfly keyboard.

Is the 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro 2019 competitive with Apple's midrange specifications with four Thunderbolt 3 ports? The new template is powerful enough for basic tasks and running multiple programs at once, as well as light video editing and working in Photoshop.

If you're ready to sacrifice two additional Thunderbolt 3 ports, a slight drop in performance unrelated to the cost difference, and a slower, slower SSD, Apple's latest base model, MacBook Pro , is the solution. Otherwise, you have plenty of options to choose from with their new range of laptops.
