More details are out for Apples upgrades planned for the iPhone in 2019, and the unfortunate but expected news is that Apple does not seem to have anything new to offer. Feature upgrades are already widely available on Android and should become prolific well before Tim Cook unveils family supposedly named iPhone 11 in September.
The latest details were revealed by the Ming-Chi Kuo industry specialist, and rated by Chance Mller:
… The 2019 iPhone models will retain the same screen sizes as the iPhone XS and iPhone XR. That means we'll have 6.5 inch, 5.8 inch and 6.1 inch iPhones. Kuo says the three will retain Lightning connectivity instead of USB-C.
According to Kuo, the 2019 iPhones will offer ultra-wideband connectivity for indoor positioning and navigation, a frosted glass case, a two-way wireless charging for charging other devices, a Improved face identifier with a high-power illuminator, larger batteries, and a triple-camera design.
If you work on the checklist of features that will be considered "new" by consumers, you will have difficulties. The nearest positioning is close to the new one, but it has been integrated with Android P and, as the handsets launch with the latest version of the operating system, the software can take advantage of it.
You can cite the FaceID update and the geekerati will be happy to explain how this will be more accurate in many circumstances … but it's not a unique selling point. Android phones with front-facing cameras push to unlock the face. While they may not be as secure as the Apple system, they offer the same benefit to those looking for a new phone (and let's not forget that for secure apps, Android insist on safer biometrics , such as a fingerprint).
For many Apple enthusiasts, the news that the battery will be larger will be welcome, but with a battery that is already considered "small" compared to the competition, it is not much more than to offer a slightly larger number. Given Apple's recent problems with battery capacity, a better question might be whether the battery will remain efficient in 18 months.
If you are going to use the iPhone to "wirelessly charge" your accessories, you will need a bigger battery, but I wonder if the inductive load the circuits will sit down. This feature debuted last year, Huawei's Maw 20 Pro, and is expected to be a key element in the marketing of the Samsung Galaxy S10.
Honestly I would prefer that Apple sorts AirPower, which was announced in 2017 but still has to make its appearance.
As for the triple camera, it will probably be limited to the new iPhone Max device and will arrive on the scene about 18 months after the competition has offered three goals to improve clarity and provide better images.
So we end up with frosted glass, perhaps with the new steel frame evoked yesterday by Gordon Kelly of Forbes. Apple will be responsible for promoting handsets instead of advanced features, improved performance, or a process in which the team has "thought differently." The new iPhones will have the same features as the competition, the same range of applications as the competition and the same fullscreen and minimal screens of competition.
The only real benefit – iOS lockdown – decreases as more data live in the cloud and more software and services run across multiple platforms. The first will bring a little advantage to Apple in the Western markets, but this advantage decreases. And a glimpse of the poor performance of Apple's Chinese market, where these benefits for iPhone do not exist, should allow Tim Cook and his team to stay awake at night.
Now read how the iPhoneChina's performance is a worrying look at the future …
