Miss Mississippi USA, Asya Branch, has been crowned Miss USA 2020. The 22-year-old was named the winner in a ceremony at Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis on Monday night.

Branch is from Booneville and is the first African American to represent the state in the annual competition. The feat also marked the first time a contestant from Mississippi has won the title.

In her closing statement to the contest, Branch touched on gun laws.

“As a person who grew up in a house with guns, I learned very early on to load, shoot and secure guns,” she said. “And I think education should be available to everyone. I think we should require people to take training and safety courses before they are allowed to buy a gun and before they get a license. . “

“I think it’s important not to ban guns because people will find a way to get what they want anyway anyway,” she continued. “But I think this is our Second Amendment and we just need more security on it.”

Branch showed sheer shock when her name was called and she was quickly crowned.

In a video posted to Twitter after her coronation, Branch was asked “Who are you?” “Miss USA!” she cried proudly.

Miss USA 2020 was originally scheduled for spring, but has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Miss Idaho USA, Kim Layne, was named the first finalist, while Miss Oklahoma USA, Mariah Jane Davis, became the second finalist.
