With dozens of different Oreo fragrances currently available in stores, one might think that Nabisco – the milkmaker's favorite cookie – would have already run out of ideas.
But they certainly have not. This fall, the brand is back with a brand new mystery flavor. If you guess what it is, you may be able to earn some seriousness.
This week, TODAY was able to taste the new treat and, if the flavor was rather discordant, many people had the same idea of what it could be.
The new cookies, which appeared on store shelves on September 16th, look like ordinary Oreos with dark chocolate cookies in a white cream filling. But instead of the usual vanilla, this cream has a distinctly spicy flavor.
"Prepare your mind and prepare your taste buds, because the OREO mystery could be anything from the combination of two current Oreo flavors to an entirely new flavor," the company said in a statement to TODAY.
A person who correctly guesses the exact flavor will earn $ 50,000.
If you can not identify the flavor only by taste, Oreo will offer you "useful tips" to point you in the right direction. The company publishes three different versions of the mystery packs, each containing a different index. They will also reveal every Monday an additional clue on the Oreo Facebook page.
TODAY, the critics of the new cookie were very much shared.
"I really like, really that!" said a taster.
"The cream tastes like chemicals and I usually like Oreo cream," said another slightly disappointed taster.
"I've never had an Oreo that I did not like – until now," said another taster.
Many found the biscuit too sweet to finish everything, while others plunged into the packaging for a few seconds. What most people have agreed on is the strong cinnamon flavor, which emerges from the packaging as soon as it's opened. Many people have guessed Graham cookies, speculoos (biscuit butter), gingerbread, Teddy Graham cookies and even s'mores as a source of taste inspiration behind cookies.
But, of course, we will only know the exact flavor later this fall.
This is not the first time that Oreo has launched a mystery flavor. They did it for the first time in 2017, releasing what turned out to be a cereal flavor of Fruity Pebbles. Critics of this cookie have also been quite discordant.
"They were awful me and my guy had 1 biscuit each and we both took a bite and could not finish it," said one person.
"Hm. I thought it was an industrial cleaner scented with orange, "said another.
This year, anyone who thinks they have solved the problem of cookies has until November 10 to give their best estimate and have the chance to win the prize in cash.
