SINGAPORE – Triple Frontier is a military action thriller that takes a different path.
The team of former soldiers consists of weapons experts with reluctant fingers of relaxation. They engage in situations of life and death without slogans or jokes. And although the story speaks of the team hiring a drug lord, there are no villains in history – the dangers they face result from their own vices.
Chuck Roven, the 69-year-old film producer, said the film takes the military genre "and overthrows it".
He was speaking at a press conference at Marina Bay Sands last Saturday (March 9th) with movie stars – Charlie Hunnam, Ben Affleck and Garrett Hedlund.
Affleck, 46, who plays the leader of the team, threw cold water on the idea that as the actors are mainly male actors sweating in the action sequences , the decor was flooded with testosterone.
Former members of the special forces of the film advisory team told the actors that the men in these units value teamwork and camaraderie above all else.
"It is not a matter of telling a male story or a masculinity, but a story rooted in the truth of special forces," he said.
The story, which also includes Oscar Isaac and Pedro Pascal and the team members, begins when former warriors find themselves facing emotional and financial difficulties in civilian life.
When they learn of the existence of a massive cash cache in an isolated place of a country in South America still unknown, they decide to steal it. The problem is that the money is in the compound of a drug lord, protected by armed guards.
The screenplay began under the pen of former journalist Mark Boal, the Oscar-winning writer behind the storyline of the war drama The Hurt Locker (2008). For the story of the hunt for terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Boal's screenplay was nominated for the Oscars.
Boal's stories are known to tackle deeper issues under a layer of action and suspense. In The Hurt Locker, it was the effect of the war on the psyche of an expert in bomb neutralization. Zero Dark Thirty has sparked controversy because of his portrayal of the use of torture to obtain intelligence.
In the movie Netflix, the script, co-written with director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, 2011, All Is Lost, 2013) is also topical.
The British actor Hunnam, 38, who has spent most of his life in the United States, said that the story addressed the consequences of aging older warriors.
"We are exploring the difficulty of reintegrating into civilian life when your central focus and training are no longer considered useful or helpful when you are still in the prime of life," he said.
The film also suggests that money and military interventions go hand in hand – when mistakes are made, the money changes hands, but transgressions are never totally forgiven.
Affleck called the film "a parable about greed and temptation".
