The newest set in the gathering, Hogwarts without the Terf

More than just a card game to demoralize your friends, Magic: the gathering has its own story, with each new card game set in magical realms called airplanes. Recent planes have included the viking theme Kaldheim, the inspired fairy tale Eldraine, and now with Strixhaven, publisher Wizards of the Coasts is playing Hogwarts its popular card game.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Strixhaven is a school of mages founded by five mighty dragons, each with their own disciplines and personalities. They divided their school into five different colleges, each dedicated to the ideals of their founders. Magic posted a short and cute blog about each of the colleges. Strixhaven looks a lot like a real university with departments of math, science, history and literature, each with their unique magical flair.

I love Magic: the gathering, but I’ve always been more drawn to the characters on the maps than the worlds they occupy. I identified with black characters like Kaya and without issue and deeply respected characters like Ashiok despite the misery they have caused me every time their card materialized from my opponent’s hand.

With Strixhaven, I am really excited to know more about the world. It sounds so fun – a stark contrast to Magicthe usual stories of war or survive in monster infested environments. Strixhaven it seems like they’re just kids learning and having fun, and it’s a nice change of pace –Magic could use a little lightness. It can not be Nicol Bolas tries to conquer worlds all the time, right?

Here is my brief summary of the schools.

Witherbloom is the school for organic nerds who like to sting things alive or dead and who definitely have a collection of taxidermized animals. Quandrix is ​​the school that managed to make magic boring by adding math to it. Prismari is the theater school for children – at any time of the day at least one person can be heard singing “Seasons of Love”. Lorehold is the history college and is fully populated with children reading at lunchtime, recess and in the washroom. Finally, Silverquill is aimed at literary nerds who believe wearing black is a substitute for personality.

In addition to a standard deck of cards, Wizards will be releasing pre-made Commander decks for each of the Colleges. I personally choose Lorehold because I’m a story nerd who prefers to play white mana decks and … I was one of those kids who read at lunchtime, recess, and in the bathroom.

Strixhaven: School of the Magi will not be out for another couple of month, but you can expect to see more cards and hopefully more story as the release date nears.
