The great magellanic cloud represents barely 1% of the size of the Milky Way and more than 63,000 light-years away from Earth. You might think that it would take a space telescope like Hubble or a huge observatory to do it justice. But the 240-megapixel image was taken by a small group called Southern Sky with the help of a telescope in Chile of a width of 160 mm (6.3 inches).
Sewn from almost 4,000 separate images, it took 1,060 hours (6.3 weeks) of photos taken from July 2017 to January 2019 and two computers of eight days to assemble the photos. But what a beauty.
