NFL owners voted to approve the regular season extension from 16 games to 17 starting with the 2021 season at Tuesday’s virtual annual meeting, while reducing the number of preseason games by four at three.

The 17 games of the season are divisional-based interconference clashes, with AFC getting the home supplement this year and NFC next year. This season, the AFC North faces the NFC West, which means the third-placed Browns will host the Cardinals, who finished 8-8 in 2020 and missed the playoffs.

Under the new formula, each team plays 17 regular season games with a week off. The clubs will host 10 games in total – either nine regular season games and one preseason game or eight regular season games and two preseason games.
