New Jersey health officials on Monday reported 3,694 more confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 21 more deaths, with the total number of vaccinations in the state exceeding 565,000.

The seven-day average for a confirmed new positive test is 4,365, down 15% from last week and 5% from a month ago.

“We average about 25,000 vaccinations a day,” Gov. Phil Murphy said during his latest coronavirus briefing in Trenton. He noted that the federal government’s vaccine supply remains limited. “We know the demand for vaccines is much greater.”

New Jersey launched a hotline Monday morning to schedule vaccinations for those who are eligible – 855-568-0545. More than 58,000 calls were received by noon, health officials said.

“Right now, very limited appointments are available,” said Judith Persichilli, Health Commissioner.

Statewide hospitalizations for confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases rose to 3,238 on Sunday night, but it’s still down 16% from a recent peak on December 22.

The statewide transmission rate decreased to 0.94 from 0.97. Any number greater than 1 means the epidemic is increasing.

The positivity rate for tests on Thursday, the most recent day available, was 9.62% for 54,987 tests.

New Jersey has now reported 598,660 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the nearly 11 months since its first positive test on March 4. Another 68,291 cases of antibody tests have been reported, although these are considered probable and may overlap with confirmed tests.

The state of 9 million people reported 20,972 virus-related deaths during that time – 18,851 confirmed deaths and 21 deaths considered probable. New Jersey reported 1,869 deaths in January.

Deaths from the coronavirus in New Jersey have exceeded what is typically recorded for heart disease and cancer, the two main killers year after year.

VACCINATIONS

So far, 565,401 doses of the coronavirus vaccine have been administered in New Jersey, according to the state’s Scoreboard. Of these, 492,260 was the first of two doses people will receive.

That’s out of nearly a million doses the state has received from the federal government, according to a current count from the federal Centers for Disease Control.

The state’s six mega-vaccination sites have opened.

New Jersey has been criticized for having a slower deployment than dozens of other states as it continues to grapple with a second wave of the pandemic, CDC data shows.

Officials point out that the state depends on the federal government for its supply and only receives 100,000 doses per week, although New Jersey has a capacity of 470,000 per day.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

The 3,238 patients hospitalized with confirmed (3,017) or suspected (221) COVID-19 cases in New Jersey’s 71 hospitals on Sunday night were 17 more than the night before.

This included 596 in critical or intensive care (five less than the night before), with 390 on ventilators (nine more).

There were also 240 COVID-19 patients discharged on Sunday, according to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.

The governor said any hospitalization of more than 5,000 patients would likely trigger new rounds of restrictions. But the number of people hospitalized has mostly declined slowly in recent days after peaking more than seven months with 3,873 people on December 22.

SCHOOL CASE

At least 597 students and staff from 121 New Jersey school districts have contracted COVID-19 during outbreaks at school, according to the latest update from state health officials.

This is an increase of 10 districts and 40 cases from the previous weekly report. There are now confirmed school-based outbreaks in all 21 counties, although the state does not identify individual school districts.

These figures do not include students or staff suspected of having been infected outside of school or cases that cannot be confirmed as epidemics at school. Although the numbers continue to rise each week, Murphy said the school epidemic statistics remained below what state officials expected when schools reopened for in-person classes.

New Jersey defines school outbreaks as cases where contact tracers have determined that two or more students or school staff had caught or transmitted COVID-19 in class or during school activities at school.

BREAKDOWN BY AGE

Broken down by age, 30-49 year olds represent the highest percentage of New Jersey residents who have contracted the virus (31.2%), followed by 50-64 year olds (23.7%), 18-29 (19 , 3%), 65 -79 (11.1%), 5-17 (7.5%), 80 years and over (5.4%) and 0-4 (1.6%).

On average, the virus has been deadlier for older residents, especially those with pre-existing conditions. Almost half of the deaths from COVID-19 in the state were among residents aged 80 and over (47%), followed by those aged 65 to 79 (33%), aged 50 to 64 (15 , 6%), 30 to 49 years (4%), 18 to 29 years. (0.4%), 5-17 (0%) and 0-4 (0%).

At least 7,698 of the deaths from COVID-19 in the state have been among residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. That number has grown at a faster rate again in recent months, with deaths in nursing homes across the state nearly tripling in December.

There are currently active outbreaks in 427 facilities, resulting in 6,994 active cases among residents and 7,675 among staff.

WORLDWIDE FIGURES

As of Monday afternoon, there had been more than 99.3 million positive COVID-19 tests across the world, according to an ongoing count from Johns Hopkins University. More than 2.13 million people have died from complications from the coronavirus.

The United States has reported the most cases, at over 25.1 million, and the most deaths, at more than 419,000.
