The Not Very Epic Conclusion – This Week In The Games

Hey people! By the time you read this, the internet will be about to go completely bonkers. Deltarune Chapter 2. So what’s new in the news this week? Well, we’ve got a resolution from the Epic vs. Apple lawsuit, a bunch of retro left-field remakes, fighting game stuff, and a preview of this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Let’s dive in!

EPIC CONCLUDED AGAINST APPLE, MANY LS WERE HELD

The gaming lawsuit that could determine the fate of gaming platforms is over. Type of. So who won ? Well… it’s a little weird, but ultimately, it’s the best result I could have hoped for. Basically Apple and Epic both got the blow of the judge’s hammer, and the ultimate winner will likely be consumers, who will now have the option to bypass Apple’s App Store for payments if they choose.

But it’s a little more complicated than that. Apple actually won on nine of the ten counts, with the judge saying it was not a monopoly in the strictest definition. However, it is this account that they ruled in favor of Epic for that is most important. Although not declared a monopoly, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found that Apple still had anti-competitive behavior in not allowing developers to offer their own payment options, chaining them to App Store payments and at their 30% reduction.

In the words of the judge: “The Court does not find that Apple is an antitrust monopoly in the mobile game transactions submarket… However, it does find that Apple’s conduct in enforcing the anti-management restrictions is anti-competitive.

The court also found Epic at fault for breach of contract, as they pulled out their pits to try and bypass App Store payments. So although he gave Apple a good slap on their App Store rules, the court said that Epic still owed Apple 30% of the money they earned while their system was running. VBucks alternative purchase was working. Additionally, Epic’s developer account is still frozen and Fortnite won’t be returning to the App Store until Apple says so (probably not anytime soon).

The answers are what you’d expect: Apple is content with not being declared a monopoly while trying to avoid mentioning that they lost on perhaps the most important boss, while Epic promises to do. appeal of the lawsuit and that CEO Tim Sweeney is acting like a petulant kid on Twitter.

As a person with no love lost for either of these societies, I like this decision. Apple (and probably other similar storefronts like google play) can no longer tie developers to their payment systems and sky-high fees, while Epic’s heinous theatrics of being the poor, abused developer who dared to take on the big bad Apple has been comically shot. It’s hard to tell if this is the end of it all – as I mentioned above a call is pretty much guaranteed – but it’s nice to feel that these two great companies have received some of the punishment they’ve got. ‘they deserve.

NIGHT STROKE RISE OF THE TOMB OF DARKNESS

So this one is waaaaaaay out of left field. Who besides me knows Data East’s arcade beat-em-up Night slashers? Okay, two of you. So, for those who don’t know, Night slashers is a 1993 arcade brawler with some of the coolest designs and atmosphere the genre has ever seen. Think Alien vs. predator but with classic horror monsters. Want to beat the crap out of the monstrous undead legions with an American cyborg, a British vampire hunter dandy and a Chinese martial artist? Then Night slashers is the game for you. Developer Data East’s premise, memorable visual style, and general “throw it all out and see if it works” attitude has earned the game a cult following, although the quality of the actual gameplay is rather debated among beat-em-ups. . nerds.

Either way love her or hate her we’re about to have more Night slashers, because a remake has just been announced by… Forever Entertainment? These guys again? Holy shit, how many projects do they have going on right now? There is that, the house of death redone, the Tank Dragon Two remake, a new one Magic drop game, unannounced stuff for Square Enix… Yeah, I’m a little worried they’re biting more than they can chew here. They recently got some investment from Nintendo, so who knows, maybe they’re going to have a big expansion and a hiring wave.


In any event. Night slashers is being remade! We know almost no details – although it’s probably safe to assume it’s headed for the Switch – and we’ll have to wait for Forever Entertainment to release more details … as with essentially everything they’ve announced. If you’re curious, you can definitely take a look at the original while you wait for more news. Who knows, you might really like it!

TWO NEWS SKILL THE GAMES ARE COMING … FROM MICROIDDES

Oh man Skillis in the news! I can talk about one of my favorite topics: Skill Games!

Skillhas struggled to re-enter the console / PC gaming market over the past few years, and it’s been going pretty well for them overall, thanks to a mix of in-house and outsourced development. We just received details of another such outsourcing effort, as the company today announced that it has entered into a deal with French publisher Microids to create two games based on the existing Taito IP.

Now, as a dedicated taitologist, I’m always a little worried when I hear someone else take care of their creations, especially if I’ve never heard of them before. I didn’t recognize the Microids name, which alarmed me, so I did some research – and honestly, I feel a lot more confident that they’ll do something worthwhile after they’ve done it. Microids is based outside of France and has been around since the mid-1980s, going through a multitude of name and owner changes over the years, but still managing to maintain a steady rate of release. They are best known for adventure games, especially the Syberia and Strange world series, but lately they’ve expanded their offering to post casual, indie, and arcade experiences. The latter is what concerns me the most when it comes to management Skill IP. Looking at their catalog, they are the ones who managed to get the long-in-development-hell Sure remake. It is certainly encouraging!

Anyway, since the games themselves haven’t been announced, I’m going to take a risk and assume that the game licenses that Microids will work with will be things that are traditionally done well in Europe, like New Zealand history and Rastan Saga, rather than obscurities like Puchi Charat Where City of crime. (If the licensed game was converted to PCs in the late ’80s and early’ 90s, then you already have a head start in this European nostalgia market.)

COMBAT GAME NEWS SUMMARY: OH NO, IT’S BACK

Oh no, do we have really need kukri back King of Fighters XV? Reminder: this guy canonically put together all SNK Heroines for the sole purpose of being a climbing plant.


Also note: Omnia Ghostbreaker has been postponed to 2022. Definitely the right choice, as the segment of fighting game players who would be most interested in Ghost breaker are currently focusing their attention on the impending Lumina blood group melty Release. 2021 has been a big year for fighting games, so why risk being eclipsed?

  • Sega teases a new RPG announcement for TGS 2021. No word on if this is a new IP or something classic dug out of the vaults, but man, could you imagine how many people will totally lose it if something thing Arcadian Skies-link emerged?
  • Sophie Workshop 2 was disclosed via the Australian Rating Board. Some people might be disappointed that we don’t have more Ryza and her thundering thighs, but damn it, give the girl some time to relax!
  • Old Gundam VS developer Byking announced he was reviving his original The magician’s death IP arcade as a PS4 game titled Magician’s Dead: Soul Force. A little odd timing for a new installment, considering the original arcade game has been offline for almost three years now… yet I can’t wait to see how it goes.
