TAMPA, Florida – Laser Spine Institute employees learned Friday night that the operation was closing immediately.

According to a statement issued to ABC Action News, lack of funding is to blame.

According to the company's website, the company employed more than 1,000 people in Tampa, Cincinnati, Scottsdale and St. Louis.

The Tampa site has been open since March 2005.

ABC Action News spoke to a patient who had traveled to Tampa for surgery at LSI.

The company said it was in the process of contacting patients with scheduled procedures to inform them of closures. He is also in touch with other surgical service providers to determine if they can absorb the additional surgical demand, according to the release.

An Oklahoma City site closed in late 2018.

The Laser Spine Institute has touted its minimally invasive spinal procedures in ambulatory settings.
