The Green Bay Packers have spent much of the last two offseasons re-doing their defense. General Manager Brian Gutekunst has spent a lot of money and a lot of capital planning to add talent to the list on that side. However, by appealing to all this talent, some of the players who were part of the team before his arrival were usurped.
One of the players was Josh Jones, who saw the Packers sign Adrian Amos a big free-agency contract, and then move on to the selection phase to select the former Maryland goalkeeper, Darnell Savage. Jones appeared to face a significantly reduced workload for the 2019 season and would have requested an exchange with the Packers. Instead, they informed him of his release.
Jones was the Packers' second-round pick in 2017 and has played a rotating role for them over the past two years, having made 12 starts in 29 games. He saw his market share fall by 70% during his rookie campaign to only 41% in his second season. The writing was on the wall for the end of his term when the Packers invested significant resources in the offseason position.
Now an independent player at age 24, Jones is expected to have a number of contenders by the start of the season. Any team needing security assistance could look on their own, especially since he played both free and strong security and as a hybrid linebacker for Green Bay.
